Whether you have enjoyed years of veganism or are ready to try it for the first time, you should know the different vitamins and minerals that come from plant-based foods. Past research shows that being vegan or vegetarian may be a healthier lifestyle, however you still need to be vigilant with the food you consume to reduce the risk of developing nutritional deficiencies. Vegan diet deficiencies can result if vegans do not eat the correct amount of nutrients like vitamin B12 and amino acids provided by protein.
Our Caribbean vegan meals are packed full of the best quality proteins, vitamins and minerals to give the human body everything it needs to function.
High Protein Vegan Meal Prep
There is a common misconception that protein comes from meat and other animal sources, however there are plenty of vegan-friendly plant-based foods that are extremely high in protein.
Protein makes up around 17% of the body’s total weight. The reference nutrient intake (RNI) for protein is 0.75g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. This is approximately 56 g/day for men and 45 g/day for women.
Our Favourite Vegan Protein Sources:
- Tofu (100g = 8g of protein)
- Chickpeas (100g = 7g of protein)
- Nuts (6 almonds = protein / 3 whole walnuts = 3g of protein)
- Seeds (1 tablespoon of hemp seeds = 5g of protein /One tablespoon of pumpkin seeds = 4g of protein)
- Lentils (100g = 9g of protein
- Quinoa (100g = 4g of protein)
- Soybeans (100g = 36g of protein)
- Pinto beans (100g = 21g of protein)
How to Get Enough B12 as a Vegan?
Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin used to replenish blood cells, neurological function and maintenance of the nervous system. Usually, the body has enough vitamin B12 stored to last 30 years (wow!), however, your store can deplete pretty quickly if the intake is decreasing.
Vegans are at a higher risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency because of the lack of animal and dairy sources. There are a few plant-based alternatives we love that you need to try!
Vegan Plant-Based B12 Sources:
- Naturally fortified foods (Foods that have nutrients added to them, improving nutrition and added health benefits)
- Milk alternatives (Rice milk, coconut milk and almond milk provide calcium and B12)
- Vegan spreads
- Breakfast cereals
- Yeast extract
Following a vegan diet is healthy but can present some challenges as mentioned above. However, when balanced correctly the vegan diets contain higher amounts of fibre, carbohydrates and micronutrients. Since 2014, the number of vegans in the United Kingdom soared to 3.5 million in 2018, up 700%, according to Livekindly.
